Claiming Grace Works by Terry Schupbach-Gordon May 7, 2021 - June 6, 2021 Ventures Gallery Opening Reception: Friday, May 7, 2021 (5 – 7pm) Artist Statement This exhibition addresses concepts of identity, fragility and strength and is part of a deeply personal narrative about who we are and how we claim grace for our different voices and our bodies. A printmaker and book artist working with images and language seen through the lens of disability and difference, Schupbach-Gordon uses images exploring concepts of water and buoyancy to describe and re-frame our understanding of frailty and resilience. While the work is not “about” disability, disability is the lens through which she sees the world. Printmaking and letterpress are the languages that are used and the crafts that she loves. The prints are a combination of intaglio, woodcut, collage, and letterpress. Many are cut and pieced, like quilts and are hand sewn and one of a kind. All the pieces for this exhibition are works on paper. Some of the works are two dimensional, and some are sculptural artist books. Biography Originally from Kentucky, Terry earned both her BFA and MFA from Indiana University and taught Printmaking and Book Arts at Kenyon College from 1979- 1983, and at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design from 1983- 1988. In 1988 she opened Catbird (on the Yadkin) Press in NC where she lives and works today. Her career as a printmaker started in 1972. In addition to her work in the visual arts, she is also a storyteller, puppeteer, co-director of Catbird Press, and an advocate for disability issues. Drawn to printmaking because of the expressive nature of its history, and a love of poetry and of storytelling, the artist is naturally drawn to works that use both words and images. As a printmaker and book artist, Schupbach-Gordon works with images and language seen through the lens of disability and difference.
