 key’ Trial was a culture war more than 100 years ago. It\nbrought togeth
 er two well-known personalities of the time\, Clarence\nDarrow\, the lawye
 r for the damned\, and William Jennings Bryan\, the\nformer three-time can
 didate for president. It was also the first trial\never to be broadcast on
  national radio\, and it was a public relations\nstunt by the town of Dayt
 on\, Tennessee to bolster their local economy.\nThe trial was an outgrowth
  of an effort by the state of Tennessee to\nban evolution from the teachin
 g of biology in public schools in\nTennessee\, led by Bryan. The defense\,
  led by Darrow in the criminal\ntrial\, hoped to educate the nationwide pu
 blic about evolutionary\nscience and eventually to reach the Supreme Court
  of the United States\nwhere they were attempting to undermine\, once and
