Making the Cut Opens at CAMP Rehoboth with a July 12 Reception

Jul 27, 2024
From June 29 to July 31, CAMP Rehoboth proudly presents "Making the Cut," an extraordinary exhibition featuring the Delaware White-line Woodcut Guild. The reception will be held on July 12, from 5 to 7 p.m., offering a unique opportunity to meet the artists, learn about the process and see a live demonstration. This exhibition showcases the revival of the white-line woodcut technique by a talented group of local artists. This distinctive art form, a blend of woodcarving and watercolor painting, has historic roots tied to the Rehoboth Art League and originated in Provincetown, MA in 1916. The white-line woodcut technique involves carving an image onto a wooden block, outlining areas, and applying watercolor paint. A traditional Japanese print paper is then laid over the block and rubbed to transfer the image. Successive layers of paint enhance the colors and textures, resulting in each print being a unique masterpiece, enriched by the wood grain and paper texture. The "Making the Cut" exhibition features original prints by Lisa Bain, Anne Barney, Michele Bartley, Robert Cumming, Debra Dircks, Fred Dylla, Bill Evaul, Jann Haynes Gilmore, Mark Harris, Arlene Matzkin, Lindley McGrew, Lorraine Quinn, Sherry Sherwood, Leslie Snowdon-Jones, and Lori Swift. Fred Dylla, a Lewes artist and founder of the Guild, learned the white-line woodcut techniques from Bill Evaul, a Provincetown artist who has promoted this art form through workshops and exhibitions across the Northeast for over 40 years. Fred has since shared his expertise with the Guild members, fostering a community passionate about this art form. Join us at the Artists' Reception at CAMP Rehoboth, 37 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach on July 12, from 5 to 7 p.m., to experience this remarkable technique firsthand. Meet the artists, delve into the history of white-line woodcuts, and enjoy a live demonstration. The Guild hopes this showcase will inspire others to discover and appreciate the art of white-line woodcuts. The exhibition is open to the public at the CAMP Rehoboth Gallery, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit us early between 9 and 10 a.m. to avoid the parking meters! Venue: CAMP Rehoboth.
